Abstract:
Long-lived particles (LLPs) have become a new frontier in the exploration of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this talk, I will present two complementary approaches to phenomenological studies on LLP searches at the LHC. In the first part of the talk, I will show the implementation of four types of LLP searches at the LHC in the software framework of CheckMATE2. This allows for reinterpretation of these search results in terms of models for new physics, which is illustrated for two simple phenomenological models involving either a U(1)-charged or a colored scalar. In the second part, I will discuss the proposal of a novel search based on time-delayed leptons, to be performed with the planned minimum ionizing particle timing detector at CMS during the high-luminosity LHC era. The analyses indicate that the new search strategy has the potential to probe the parameter space that is complementary to other traditional LLP search strategies such as those based on the displaced vertex.
