Abstract:
Many particle physics theories beyond the Standard Model have cosmic string solutions. If Nature is described by such a theory, then cosmic strings will form in the early universe and survive to the present time. The gravitational effects of the strings will lead to signatures in all observational windows, and searching for these signals is a way to probe particle physics at high energy scales. I will discuss signals of cosmic strings in several observational windows, in particular 21-cm redshift surveys. I will also explain the role which string loops can play in the formation of high redshift galaxies and high redshift super-massive black holes.
