The Kondo Effect – from Spin to Orbital Degrees of Freedom

The Kondo effect is a long-standing paradigmatic many-body problem in condensed matter physics. The recent progresses in nanoscience and technology has made possible new realizations of exotic Kondo physics. In this talk, I will first review the standard Kondo effect due to isolated localized spin-half magnetic moments. Then I shall focus on our recent experimental observation of the two-impurity Kondo effect and a (possible) quantum phase transition in metal-insulator-metal tunnel junctions. I will also show our observation of nonmagnetic Kondo effect due to two-level tunneling systems in metal nanowires. In the last case, the Kondo physics originates from the coupling of the electron orbital wave-functions with dynamic defects (moving scattering centers).
