Introduction | How structures form is one of the key questions for cosmology and astrophysics. Let's list questions from small scale to large scale. How does earth form? How stars form? How galaxies form? How galaxies distribute in the universe? How does the universe evolve? We human beings are so smart to raise these questions. And some of us is even smarter, they can translate these questions into models, formulas, mathematical forms, within the structure of physical laws we know. Unfortunately, we are not smart enough to solve all these smart formulas describing the universe. But we are smart enough to make computers, which can help us solve them with brute force. So here is where we start our story, structure formation and cosmological N-body simulation. In this mini school, you will learn the basics of cosmology, structure formation and numerical simulation. Practically, you will learn how to use open source code Gadget2 to run your own cosmological N-body simulation. The lectures will mainly cover large scale structure formation and cosmology. Galaxy formation, star formation and planet formation is not included in the talks. Lectures in the morning will be theoretical and in the afternoon are mainly practice. Please bring your laptop with Linux system installed or remotely linked to a Linux system workstation. You will learn the skill hand-by-hand. Organizer: Prof. Kingman Cheung (NCTS & NTHU) Lecturer: Jia-Jun Zhang (CUHK) |
