Abstract
We will discuss recent developments in the context of black hole microstates and their counting, focusing on Q-cohomology and the phenomenon of fortuity. In particular, we explain how such states can be identified systematically, using as a concrete example an N=1 SCFT obtained by a mass deformation of N=4 SYM. We find that unlike N = 4 fortuitous cohomologies, they can either be non-vanishing or vanishing on the diagonal fields. We further show that the non-vanishing classes reduce to the monotone cohomologies of N = 4 SYM, whereas the vanishing classes reduce to the fortuitous cohomologies of N = 4 SYM. This suggests that fortuity can arise due to a relevant deformation, while monotonicity does not.
